Light and Airy Aubusson

Hi and Welcome Back!

My last post featured this vintage Aubusson rug and I promised to come back with a new design, giving the rug a more starring role. That first design was light, airy, and a little folksy. I wanted to push the airy factor by lightening things up even more and the result was something quite different.

Here’s what I came up with…

My New Creation

Lighter lines, white upholstery, and this groovy wallpaper, cancelled the folksy feel and stepped up the glamour.

My aim was to let the rug shine by turning the volume down on its companions. They are quieter now, color-wise, but they still have a lot of personality.

I chose the Kelly Weastler wallpaper in ivory and gold, a ka-razy French Art Deco console from 1stdibs, Murano glass lamps via Swank Lighting ( love those fruit on the base and how the pastel colors wink at the pink in the rug ) and a relatively sober oval mirror from Stephanie Cohen, hung horizontally.

THE LAMP

Those lamps are so swank, I think we should take a closer look at them.

As you can see in this close up, the coloured glass fruits are adorable.

A Design Question

Do you think the rug and chairs are too different from the wallpaper and console, that is, they separate too much from each other?

Lets take a second look…

Do you see what I’m saying?

Maybe I should divide the design in two?
-Keep the wallpaper/console combo, and find a new rug and chairs (and lamps while we´re at it?) .

Such As

then make a third design using the Aubusson and white chairs and find a new console, wallpaper and lamps.

Such As This

Just to demonstrate how obsessive I can be, I went searching again and found this chair.

And this chair.

One Kings Lane

And decided to try them each on a board.

Also, I noted the scale on the Weastler wallpaper was off so I resized it.

I´ll refer to the first board above as #1,  and the next two as #2 and #3.

#2

#3

Here they are all together

#1                                                                                                 #2                                                                                            #3

The barrel shape of the chairs in #2 mimics the curves in the mirror, console and lamp bases, while the upholstery and wood frame add warmth.

Board #3 has a strong light and airy vibe going, which was my aim, so maybe I nailed it in board #3 and we should call it a day?

In a space where there were other upholstered pieces adding warmth the chairs  in #3 might be even better, but of course we cannot see what else is in the space because it´s all in my head!

Thoughts?

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I agree with Lisa….chairs in #2 are my fav. And, I think they would be the most comfortable.
