Where I Store My Vases

Hi Friends and Welcome Back!

As promised, I have a new mood board today full of pattern and color.

But before we get to the reveal, I want show you the board’s inspiration and a few of its elements, beginning with…..

 

The Table

I found this beautiful serving cart while looking for a table for another post. You will see it used as a bar cart in the upcoming post, but like the famous pink Aubusson, when I find a good piece, I want to put it to good use, i.e. as much use as possible and since I’m not much of a drinker but do love flowers, I´m going to use it to store my vases.

I selected these from a host of online sources; each chosen for their variety of shape, size, color, etc. and because I liked them. There are red and green contrasts ( opposites on the color wheel) , as well as contrasts in light and dark, large and small, smooth and articulated, round and linear, and more.

A few are valuable, none really cheap; some look vintage but are new and some look new but are vintage (guess which!) .  This being a digital fantasy, I can use whatever I wish simply by downloading the image, indifferent to price or availability. You can’t beat that for instant wish-fulfilment!

 

My Inspiration

This is Leo´s Oyster Bar in San Francisco designed by the ever-inventive Ken Fulk.  I first saw this in Architectural Digest* and was enthralled by its daring-do.

I let myself be inspired by the black and white patterned floor and botanically themed, exuberantly patterned wallpaper. It’s handy that this makes a good background for storing vases, too.

*I’m shy about publishing an interior from Architectural Digest next to my humble mood board, the resolution cannot possibly compare, but I do want to be honest about my influences, where I am aware of them and share those influences with you. Also, I’ll tuck that bad boy in at the end of the post so its harder to compare image quality. !

Now for the elements inspired by the Oyster Bar ….

The Floor

ZANZIBAR by Martyn Lawrence Bullard

 Instead of Fulk’s geometric tile I wanted something organic, so I chose this rug for its lively, mysterious pattern. There are a lot of black and white rugs out there but not many as interesting as this one.

 

The Wallpaper

TREE POPPY by Colefax and Fowler 

The complex pattern, layered with both shape and color contrasts, plays well off the Zanzibar rug and my collection of vases.

 I continued the pattern play with the chair fabric and pillow.

The walls of the Oyster Bar are decorated with a mix of mirrors and art work hung, seemingly randomly, across the walls. So again, I let this guide me on the placement and variety of artwork in my vase room. Overall, a maximalist’s dream.

 I was unable to get this image to post larger, and want the details clearer, so I made a second board (below) where I enlarged the table.

I made a few other changes as well. Tried out some different vases and placements.

It took me crazy long to make these boards….. so, I’m going to sneak out of here without much more explication. Any questions, just ask!
